During the series you'll also notice some of the main characters wearing new outfits. Almost everyone's outfit changes when they make the time jump to the Naruto Shippuuden series.

Each village has a standard on how Chuunins and Jounins are distinguished. But as a whole, the Leaf Village is pretty lenient on ninja dresscode.

The chuunin exam

The second exam shown in Naruto is the chuunin exam. It's a pretty long exam where only a few ninjas pass, and become chuunin squad leaders.
